Second Life message log about budgets

June 30th, 2008

[17:41]  Buteo Ruttan: hi, wassup?
[17:48]  Hour Destiny: Hello. Playing Anarchy Online, actually. It’s a sci-fi MMOG.
[17:49]  Hour Destiny: Been working on a wiki and live chat on the website.
[17:51]  Buteo Ruttan: is there a new website?
[17:52]  Hour Destiny: http://www.spacedestiny.org
[17:52]  Hour Destiny: The wiki is /wiki and the live chat is /help
[17:57]  Buteo Ruttan: nice! not complaining, but wondering when it moved? don’t recall being told about the change directly. not a prob, just wondering…
[17:58]  Hour Destiny: It was the hosting that moved.
[17:59]  Hour Destiny: Anderson Urqhart, the head of the NASA CoLab Welcome Team and my Vice-President, runs a hosting and web design company, and is giving us free hosting.
[17:59]  Hour Destiny: There should have been a group notice about it.
[18:00]  Hour Destiny: And one of my brothers is donating the use of a Windows 2008 Server computer that he has.
[18:04]  Buteo Ruttan: request: please put meeting dates/times in the group notice message body, not just the attachment.  when i’m not in SL, my IM goes to email,  that way i don’t have to log into SL just to get the date.  great news on all of the donated support!
[18:04]  Hour Destiny: I try to have the date and time in the subject. :)
[18:05]  Hour Destiny: I wonder how I’m going to forecast a 3 year budget.
[18:05]  Buteo Ruttan: ok; can u also ask colab to do the same, if appropriate?
[18:05]  Hour Destiny: I’ll mention it to Be.
[18:05]  Buteo Ruttan: budget, stnd by
[18:06]  Buteo Ruttan: well, i would start by making draft goals for yrs 1, 2, 3
[18:07]  Buteo Ruttan: then, figure out what funds you need to make that happen
[18:09]  Hour Destiny: That, I think I could do, at least roughly. Income is a whole another ballpark.
[18:12]  Buteo Ruttan: income…. must talk latr.  start with: min required, good to have, forget frills; pick a start $ for inc the a conservative approach is to increase it by 10%/yr
[18:14]  Hour Destiny: There’s also wages.
[18:14]  Hour Destiny: I’ll just take it one piece at a time. :)
[18:15]  Buteo Ruttan: good plan. do u have funding for wages? we don’t yet
[18:17]  Hour Destiny: Nope.
[18:17]  Hour Destiny: My impression is that we won’t have much success till we are 501(c)(3).
[18:22]  Buteo Ruttan: yes, i agree, that’s when you can really raise $, but you could seek large donations now, they would be tax deductable pending yourr 501c3 approval
[18:23]  Hour Destiny: For us, yes. Would they be deductable for the donor?
[18:24]  Buteo Ruttan: yes, unless you fail to qualify for state and fed nonprofit status
[18:24]  Hour Destiny: We have state already.
[18:26]  Buteo Ruttan: q: would u be comfortable continuing this dialog on a blog somewhere, ours our yours? i’m happy to host the discussion on one of the Ophoenix blogs if ok with you. would be nice to have a log of these exchanges, to refer back to…
[18:27]  Hour Destiny: Sure. I figure it will help many future nonprofits get started.
[18:29]  Hour Destiny: As it pertains directly to Space Destiny now, wouldn’t it be better to have the dialog on Space Destiny’s blog?
[18:31]  Buteo Ruttan: sure, do i need an account there?
[18:31]  Hour Destiny: You can Register and I’ll promote you.
[18:33]  Buteo Ruttan: link to blog is on main web page?
[18:35]  Buteo Ruttan: never mind; i’m at the blog site:)
[18:36]  Hour Destiny: :)
[18:41]  Buteo Ruttan: just reg’d as dwarfplanet…
[18:43]  Hour Destiny: Promoted to Author.
[18:44]  Buteo Ruttan: tnx; gotta go eat dinner, tlk to u latr. u ok if i post this msg log to the blog?
[18:45]  Hour Destiny: Go ahead.

MacGyver challenges network pros at Interop

May 2nd, 2008

I (Hour Destiny) was watching someone do a challenge at this booth and they couldn’t beat it. I told the people hosting the challenge how to beat it, so they setup a different one and challenged me to beat it. A woman standing near approached me, introduced herself as working for TechTarget, and said that she was looking for a “victim” to film for their blog. I consented to be her “victim” and she filmed the challenge.

My prize was called a “Network Macgyver survival kit” and looked like a mini lunchbox and inside was a piece of Bazooka Joe bubble gum (for keeping fans from blowing papers away), some duct tape, a shoelace
(for cable management), a network cable, a rack mount screw, and a paper clip (for CDs jammed in a drive).

Interop is an IT conference every year in May in Las Vegas. I got to spend 3 days at this one. Stayed at the Excalibur and had a 42″ plasma TV in the room. I brought so much stuff back (including 34 pens of different kinds), I couldn’t believe it. I even won an iPod Shuffle. I also brought back some software, 2 decks of Microsoft playing cards, a remote control, a tape measure/calculator/notepad, a jogging radio/compass, a boomerang, a Rubix’s cube, retractable earbuds, flashing LED dice, a wall-crawler in the shape of a brain, a screwdriver with a level in it, a multi-purpose screwdriver with multiple bits in the handle, a couple yo-yo’s, have a dozen T-shirts (including one in the shape of a throwing star), a head-bobber, and lots more.

I also mentioned Second Life(tm) and Space Destiny(tm) to some of the exhibitors and found that a couple of them are in SL.
